Jaguar is entering a new era with the Type 01, an all-electric luxury grand tourer that combines dramatic proportions, more than 1,000 PS of power and an unconventional approach to design. Built on a dedicated electric vehicle architecture, the four-door GT brings together performance, craftsmanship and technology while signalling a fresh direction for the British marque.
From its aerodynamic bodywork to its distinctive cabin layout, the Type 01 is designed to challenge conventional ideas of a luxury electric car. Here are five things that make Jaguar’s latest GT stand out.
1. Over 1,000 PS of Electric Performance
The Jaguar Type 01 is the most powerful Jaguar road car yet, with a tri-motor electric powertrain delivering up to 1,015 hp (1,030 PS) and 1,007 lb-ft (1,365 Nm) of torque. Power is distributed to all four wheels, enabling the luxury GT to accelerate from 0–100 km/h in a claimed 3.2 seconds.
Its performance extends beyond straight-line acceleration. Jaguar says the Type 01 can accelerate from 100–180 km/h in just 4.0 seconds, demonstrating the substantial reserves of power available at higher speeds.
The car also features a 50:50 weight distribution, intelligent torque vectoring and advanced suspension technology designed to balance agility with long-distance comfort. The objective is to deliver the responsive handling associated with Jaguar while retaining the refinement expected of a luxury grand tourer.
2. Dramatic Proportions and Exceptional Aerodynamics
The Type 01 makes a strong visual statement through its proportions. A low roofline, short front overhang, long bonnet and extended rear overhang give it a distinctive grand touring silhouette. Large 23-inch wheels further emphasise its road presence.
Jaguar’s design approach draws on the brand’s heritage, with visual references to iconic models such as the E-Type and XJS reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. Clean body surfaces and carefully sculpted forms create a shape that looks dramatic without relying on excessive styling details.
The engineering behind the design is equally significant. Jaguar describes the Type 01 as its most aerodynamic road car, with a drag coefficient of just 0.23. Active vanes, airflow optimisation and a three-stage deployable rear spoiler help manage airflow around the body.
The result is a design in which visual impact and aerodynamic efficiency work together, supporting the car’s performance and electric range.
3. Pioneering Engineering and Electric Freedom
Beneath its striking exterior, the Type 01 is built on Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA), a dedicated platform developed for the brand’s next generation of electric vehicles. This bespoke foundation allows the car’s proportions, packaging and driving characteristics to be developed around an electric powertrain from the outset.
Jaguar says more than 360 patent applications are associated with the Type 01, highlighting the scale of engineering and technological development behind the car. These applications reflect the effort to realise its distinctive design and technical ambitions.
The Type 01 also features an 850-volt electrical architecture and a battery with 118 kWh of usable capacity. Jaguar quotes a range of up to 400 miles, with up to 320 miles during sustained highway driving at 75 mph.
For longer journeys, the car supports 350 kW rapid DC charging, with Jaguar claiming that up to 200 miles of range can be added in as little as 13 minutes under suitable charging conditions.
Together, the dedicated platform, high-voltage system and extensive engineering development position the Type 01 as more than a conventional luxury car converted to electric power.
4. A Luxury Cabin Built Around a Central Spine
Inside, the Type 01 takes a distinctive approach to space and layout. A prominent central spine runs the length of the cabin, dividing it into four individual spaces and reinforcing the car’s long, sculptural proportions.
Brass-effect anodised aluminium finishers run longitudinally along the central structure, adding a contrasting material detail to the minimalist interior. The treatment reflects Jaguar’s emphasis on craftsmanship and carefully selected finishes rather than excessive ornamentation.
Technology is integrated into the cabin through a single-glass 24-inch OLED display designed to deliver clarity and brightness. A separate seven-inch, smartphone-style touchscreen provides access to key vehicle functions.
The audio experience is another focal point. Jaguar’s Immersive Sound System incorporates Sensory Audio and a full-width, full-range Panoramic Soundbar designed to envelop occupants in sound.
The overall approach combines digital functionality with distinctive materials and an unconventional layout, aiming to make the cabin feel like a contemporary luxury lounge rather than a traditional automotive interior.
5. The Meaning Behind Type 01: A New Chapter for Jaguar
The Type 01 name carries a message about Jaguar’s heritage and its electric future. “Type” references the brand’s history of innovation and iconic models, including the C-Type and E-Type. The “0” represents electric propulsion and zero tailpipe emissions, while “1” identifies the car as the first vehicle in a new generation of Jaguars.
The car itself embodies this transition. Its bold proportions, dedicated electric platform and emphasis on craftsmanship reflect the brand’s ambition to establish a distinctive position in the luxury electric vehicle segment.
Rather than simply pursuing electrification, Jaguar has used the Type 01 to bring together dramatic design, substantial performance, advanced aerodynamics and a carefully considered cabin. Its two dynamic characters are intended to combine engaging performance with refined comfort, staying true to the grand touring tradition.
Designed, engineered and crafted in the UK, the Type 01 is the first production Jaguar built on the dedicated JEA platform. It is intended to demonstrate how the brand’s heritage can be reinterpreted for an electric future without abandoning its focus on design and driving character.
The Jaguar Type 01 has a starting MSRP of $130,500, with orders scheduled to open in early 2027.
